A Chocolate tasting with La Maison du Chocolat in Paris

A few days before our 2026 Spring Break trip to Paris, I added a "Secret Date" to my husband's calendar. He loves chocolate and I thought it would be a great idea to book us into a dégustation de chocolat, a chocolate tasting workshop. We did it with none other than Nicolas Cloiseau, the Chef Chocolatier at La Maison du Chocolat.

Founded in 1977, La Maison du Chocolat will turn 50 next year. A member of the Comité Colbert (which congregates around 100 luxury brands of France), it is one of the finest chocolate brands in France.

They have been dedicated to elevating chocolate into something to be savoured by adults as chocolate was very sugary and only consumed by children in France in the 1970s. With seasonal editions to celebrate Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter, they turned chocolate consumption into an art.
As La Maison du Chocolat has branches in several parts of the globe, you can also find special Chinese New Year or Halloween editions out of France.

This year's Easter edition was inspired by the Crocodile and its eggs. I thought it was such an innovative twist for this season marked by the usual bunnies. The packaging was sublime, replicating a crocodile skin. This edition is an exquisite example of the finest craftsmanship.

We bought a dark chocolate crocodile for a couple who invited us for dinner and I immediately regretted not buying one for ourselves as it was just a stunning piece of art to keep.

I thought we were going to the workshop to taste chocolates and know more about the art of producing chocolate - which we did - but we left enriched with the experience of one of the greatest chefs and food creatives in France.

With a shy yet approachable personality, Nicolas Cloiseau shared his personal story with the brand, how he grew from the bottom to the top and was awarded the Meilleur Ouvrier de France prize in 2007, making him a master in his art. Through his stories, he made us travel in flavours, history and the love of the arts in just 90 minutes.

I highly recommend this unique and different type of experiences provided by La Grande Épicerie de Paris.
