Namibia | Why Self-Driving is the best option
Our hired 4WD in Namibia

Disclaimer: this article is not an advert, it is our honest experience paid with our own money

Our only previous experience doing a safari was in Tanzania for our honeymoon, where we opted for sky safari - hoping with airplanes from location to location - and we had two guides with us at every National Park, never being on our own.

You can do the same in Namibia but with its amazing network of roads from North to South, Coast to the landlocked regions, we opted to rent a 4WD (four wheel drive car) and experience the country only by ourselves. Also, reality is my husband loves driving and he could not wait to do it. Our relationship has been punctuated with several road trips, from our first ones together in Angola when we had recently met to discovering Scotland, Northern Italy and Portugal.

Furthermore, my late father loved road trips and he did the Johannesburg-Windhoek trip several times in his life. I cannot help but think I honour his memory and legacy replicating what he most enjoyed doing.

And why I can only regret it

Why Namibia2Go?

As my husband designed our whole road trip, he chose Namibia2Go powered by Gondwana because:

  • no need for deposit or a pre-charge on your card
  • a vast range of cars available
  • the commodity of being located close to the airport with an included transfer to and from
  • a superb assistance in the whole country - which we did indeed come to test during the trip!

As we arrived at the airport, we had a Namibia2Go driver ready to pick us up and take us to their location less than 5 minutes away from the airport. From there you get to the most superb office with free water and coffee, the cleanest bathrooms in the world and a thorough explanation on how to use the car, deflate and change a tyre. Deflating the tire is one of the most important things to do in Namibia because you often have to go on gravel roads or off roads during your journeys. It makes it a less uncomfortable journey, to put it mildly.

How good is Namibia2Go's assistance?

During one of the legs of our trip, from Outjo to Swakopmund, we realised our aircon was not properly working which made the trip all the more adventurous under the scorching 30+ degree celsius heat whilst crossing the country.

When the sudden shift from the desert heat to the ocean’s chill felt like travelling between worlds in a single afternoon

We contacted Namibia2Go's assistance and they sent us to a garage where they could service the car in Swakopmund. Unfortunately the time they needed to repair the car was longer than expected so we headed to the Namib Desert the day after, after the respite of the coast's chilly breeze.

Namibia2Go sent us a new car to our destination at the Desert Grace, between Solitaire and Sesriem. The driver took off from Windhoek in the morning as we were taking off from Swakopmund and we arrived almost at the same time to the desert and switched the cars. Now we had a car - the same make and model - with aircon! We were so so happy about this! And positively surprised by such efficient service from the rental car company.

This made us instantly want to rate them high and, for sure, we will use them again when we are back in Namibia.
