Namibia | An Atlantic detour to Swakopmund & Walvis Bay

Swakopmund, an Atlantic Coast resort town in Namibia

After a three-day stay at Kifaru Luxury Lodge and doing a quick pitstop at Erongo Mountain Winery, we were headed for the Atlantic Coast, more specifically to the resort town of Swakopmund.

Our journey took a total of 5 hours and remind you, we had no aircon in the car, hence the much needed stop to refresh in Omaruru. But the more we would approach the Coast, the temperature started falling from 30+ degrees to the 20s and when we arrived in Swakopmund, it was 16 degrees celsius!

In a matter of hours, we had lost the scalding warmth of the interior of Namibia and were now dealing with the windy and cloudy moodiness from the Ocean. It was quite refreshing to be honest, as a lover of crispier weather.

We would only stay for one night at the Strand Hotel in Swakopmund.

As we were knackered, we had dinner at one of our hotel's restaurants, the Ocean Cellar (the vibe and menu reminded me of the restaurant Ocean Basket you can also find in South Africa, Maputo or Zanzibar).

I took the opportunity to order grilled Kingklip for me, it's one of my favourite fishes in the world and you can only find it in Namibia and South Africa. My husband had oysters and grilled shrimp. It wasn't a memorable dinner but a much appreciated one after a long day on the road.

After a restoring night we had an amazing breakfast at the Farmhouse Deli restaurant at the hotel, where we people watched and spoke of the upcoming trip plans.

Before leaving, we went for a little stroll by the ocean in the morning, heading to the famous mole from where we could see the beaches, the promenade and the famous Swakopmund Pier. Americans who visit the city mention it reminds them of California. At that moment, it was 14 degrees outside. Nice!

We then grabbed the airconless car and got ready to head south to the Namib Desert.

Before doing so, we need a very quick pit stop in Walvis Bay, just half an hour south of Swakopmund.

In that short journey, we could see many dunes and adventure spots seeking thrills with fat bikes... we should come back to do that someday!

Walvis Bay is another coastal town known for its port as well as its flamingos, we could enjoy watching from the beach promenade.

Before heading to the desert, we stopped at the shopping mall to stop up at Clicks and Dis-chem (we love those stores) and we headed to the desert. That would be one of the most exciting parts of our Namibian adventure, like crossing the iconic Tropic of Capricorn!
